It was announced today that President Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize. I fully celebrate this because it is a joy to once again have the word ‘peace’ associated with the country I so dearly love – even in the midst of its many flaws. I celebrate this award today because it brings to mind how much the world is really rooting for the U.S. to ‘get it right.’
I have no political affiliation. I’m not a Democrat, Republican nor Independent, etc. As a matter of fact I prefer to invoke the line about Democrats versus Republicans that comedian Lewis Black often uses, saying: “The difference between a Democrat and a Republican is that…” oh, wait, my mom reads this blog… never mind, sorry.
We can debate the President’s policies, what he has or has not accomplished and a myriad of other issues regarding this award but for me, all of them are beside the point: Once again, today, the U.S. is being linked with playing a recognizable role in efforts toward PEACE. And THAT is worth celebrating.

Tim, I too applaud our President for getting this wonderful award. I don’t pretend to agree with all that has and is taking place in the halls of congress and in the oval office. But I truely believe we are headed in the right direction. Unfortunately it is going to take some time to undo this whole war thing, we just need to be pateint. Congrats to our president, he deserves it!!.

Considering, (from the reactions I’m reading in e-mail, news journals, facebook, and blogs) that some are stunned at this news, some are bewildered, supporters are cheering President Obama while detractors seem suspicious and distrustful, you’ve focused our attention on the most important outcome amidst the dizzying array of polarizing public opinion: The U.S. is strengthening its voice in the world dialogue on peace… Yes, that is worth celebrating! Thanks for bringing things back into focus.

I hope that the American people will rise to the occasion of peacemaking, and that they will applaud such an honor being bestowed on our president, who in my opinion deserves the award. I hope that he will be encouraged to make more moves for peace and bow out of the arena of force. I hope that dissenters can be listened to and not kowtowed to because those who dissent peace are the voices of fear who need comforting and soothing. I feel that many did not have enough nurturing and do not have the confidence that befits an American in such a diverse world of people, many of whom the country has become home to.
What a wonderful day it is!

Tim,
You make a good point in so far as peace and the U.S. are used in the same sentence, however, I’m not certain that a troop intensification in Afghanistan is en route to a peaceful middle east solution. Words and promises no longer affect me. They all talk a good game but in the end they appear no different…”the new boss, same as the old boss…” Obama has not impressed me in the slightest as a man interested in anything but a consolidation of power…peace is the misdirection necessary to accomplish his ends. Well, I don’t claim to have the right perspective…but I will say that I’m not comfortable with our direction. Thanks Tim.
Blessings,
Chuck
