Holidays. Drats. What a mixed bag.

Some of us discover great joy and peace because, after all, there are friends and family and food and all that stuff. We rejoice at seeing folks we haven’t seen for a while. And perhaps best of all, we get to stuff ourselves guilt-free because, hey, it’s Christmas!

Others of us discover great despair because, after all, there are friends and family and food and all that stuff! Let’s be honest, our friends always seem to make it over when there’s free food and drink on the table. And as for our family, well, don’t ‘they know’ that ‘we know’ that they really can’t wait to leave because there’s not much to say anyway? Yuck, how uncomfortable. Continue reading…

Why Did Jesus Live?

There are times when it seems that the whole of the Christian message is about ‘why Jesus died.’ In many ways, one would think that Christianity is about providing for a better death, rather than life.

In this season of celebrating the birth of Jesus, it seems to me that the real question we should be asking is not ‘Why did Jesus die,’ but ‘Why did Jesus live?’ This, for me, is the issue at hand. It is the real question because it provides me (and you too I think!) with the real reason for why we live. Continue reading…



Thanksgiving: Left Overs vs. Left Out

I’m not sure how it happened so quickly, but the holiday season is not only upon us, it’s in full gear! The Thanksgiving holiday is certainly one of my favorites. There’s friends and family and food – and in abundance. We laugh and play games, talk about the status of where we are in life and I indulge in stories that seem to grow larger each holiday season. It’s also the time of the year I always say ‘I’m going to be disciplined and not overeat this time!’ And then I stuff myself fuller than the turkey!

Even so, there are always plenty of leftovers that we seem to feast off of for the entire week. And for some unknown reason, these leftovers always seem a lot better than the normal ones, as if the turkey tastes better coming out of the fridge the second time than the store the first… or could it be the gravy and sweet potatoes that surround it?
